Hundreds of demonstrators gathered outside the opening of a new U.S. consulate in Nuuk on Thursday, protesting what many Greenlanders view as growing foreign pressure on the Arctic island amid renewed geopolitical tensions surrounding Greenland’s future.

Director of Uagut and Support Greenland, Julie Rademacher, was in Nuuk and underlines that the situation in Greenland is still difficult, but it was absolutely amazing to see and feel that threats and pressure from The American Government is now replaced with a strong feeling of love and community in Greenland.

Greenlands stand together – you can see on the images of the protests with hundreds of people in the streets. People protested to give the message that Greenlands future belongs to Greenlanders, and the respect for self-determination must be defended – not only in Nuuk, but by an international movement that extends far beyond the Greenland’s borders

“The threat against Greenland from the USA Government has changed from being a military invasion to being ammunition in an influence campaign from your cabinet spreading lies and trying to manipulate our reality.”

“So my message is very clear: Dear Americans, dear World: In Nuuk we are fighting with love and community by not accepting the lies from your government but to show we trust ourselves. We don’t trust your government’s intentions and we hope that you as people show your support to us – the greenlandic people by supporting the right to democracy.”

“What we are witnessing in Nuuk is not anti-international cooperation. It is a democratic demand for respect. Greenlanders are making it clear that international engagement in the Arctic must happen with Greenlanders – not around them,” comments Julie Rademacher.

The opening of the new consulate comes as global interest in Greenland intensifies because of Arctic security, critical minerals, shipping routes, and military strategy.
