Background
Support Greenland emerged from a moment of global crisis – and collective action. On 17 January 2025, as American senators visited Denmark and threats against Greenland’s sovereignty intensified, thousands of people took to the streets in many cities.
Organised by civil society organisations including Uagut – the National Organisation for Greenlanders in Denmark, Inuit DK, and the citizen initiative ‘Hands Off Kalaallit Nunaat’, in cooperation with ActionAid Denmark, these demonstrations sent an unmistakable message: Greenland is not for sale, and the world is watching.
The images of Greenlandic flags waving in cities across Greenland, Denmark and other cities around the world, handwritten signs declaring solidarity, and thousands standing together in the freezing cold reminded the world that fundamental principles – self-determination, sovereignty, and democratic legitimacy – are worth defending. Within days, military threats and tariffs were withdrawn. It worked. But the fight for these principles doesn’t end here.
Support Greenland was founded to sustain this movement, coordinate international solidarity, and ensure that Greenlanders will never be alone in defending their right to determine their own future.
