Recent statements from the President of the United States underlines that the debate about Greenland is far from over. Support Greenland is now calling for renewed action.

“The military threat we experienced in January has, for now, been averted, but it has been replaced by new threats. Among them is a massive American attempt to create division between Denmark and Greenland. We will not submit to emotional pressure from an individual who criticizes and describes our country as a large, poorly governed piece of ice,” says Julie Rademacher, Director of Uagut – the National Organization for Greenlanders in Denmark.

“This is why we need plans for digital independence, public awareness efforts about influence campaigns, and more resources to strengthen public debate – also beyond the major American tech giants,” she adds.

“Greenland is facing a serious threat aimed at weakening the country’s sovereignty and undermining democratic values. This is not an isolated incident, but part of a broader global threat to democracy and the rule of law. There is a need for us to stand even stronger together and strengthen our resilience.”

In recent times, Greenland has received less attention in Danish media. “However, the American influence campaign is still something we, as Greenlanders, experience as part of our everyday lives,” explains Julie Rademacher.

A recent analysis by Nordic Safe Cities shows that the Greenlandic election results were significantly shaped and influenced by foreign actors; for example through Facebook posts originating from the United States.

“To us, it is clear that the American president is trying to undermine trust and unity between Denmark and Greenland. But we will not allow them to destroy our democracies or our trust in our political systems, legal systems, free market, and free media,” says Julie Rademacher.

“In a geopolitically unstable world, it is more important than ever that we all strengthen our defenses against foreign influence campaigns that challenge the very core of free and democratic societies.”
