Democracy and self-determination must underpin the Greenland agreement
Greenland, Denmark and the United States are expected to sign an agreement on Arctic security in New York next week during the UN General Assembly.
The details have not yet been made public, and the agreement must go through parliamentary procedures before it enters into force.
“Decisions about Greenland’s future belong in Greenland’s democratic institutions and with the people of Greenland. That applies to this agreement too. Greenland’s elected representatives must be able to scrutinise it openly, and the Greenlandic people must know what it contains.”
As a small nation in an agreement of this magnitude, Greenland needs the support of the international community more than ever.
