Politicians and the public engage in important conversations about Greenland and the Arctic

Folkemødet is Denmark’s leading democracy festival, held annually over three days on the island of Bornholm. It brings together politicians, organisations, businesses and citizens to discuss some of the most pressing issues of our time; from culture and wellbeing to geopolitics and security.

Support Greenland took part in this year’s festival and remains deeply moved by the overwhelming support and encouragement we received from both decision-makers and members of the public.

Following the opening speech by Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, the first debate of this year’s festival focused on the Danish Realm and the future of the Kingdom’s cooperation. A clear indication that Greenland and the Arctic are firmly at the top of the agenda.

During the session, Director of Support Greenland, Julie Rademacher, highlighted the many initiatives and opportunities for fostering greater understanding of Greenland and the Arctic – in Denmark, Europe and abroad.

Through a series of debates and meetings with politicians from across the political spectrum, Support Greenland experienced broad support for Greenland and its right to self-determination and democracy.

Julie Rademacher also joined EU Commissioner Dan Jørgensen and geologist Minik Rosing for a discussion in the European Commission’s pavilion.

Dan Jørgensen spoke about the work undertaken by the EU when the geopolitical situation intensified in January, and about the support and goodwill shown by other EU member states during that period.
