For the first time ever, Greenland participated in Skills Denmark, Denmark’s national championship for vocational students and apprentices – bringing Arctic craftsmanship, culture, and professional excellence to a national audience.

At the Greenlandic stand, visitors had the opportunity to meet apprentices and skilled workers whose daily working conditions are unlike anything most Danes experience.

From building homes on permafrost to repairing snowmobiles in temperatures as low as minus 40 degrees Celsius, Greenlandic vocational training demonstrated both technical expertise and remarkable adaptability.

Greenlandic carpentry apprentices shared how construction in Greenland differs dramatically from traditional Danish building practices. Instead of brickwork and standard foundations, they work with frozen ground, harsh weather conditions, and remote locations where materials and logistics often present significant challenges.

“The Greenlandic apprentices brought not only their professional skills, but also their lived reality. This gave Danish young people and the wider public a unique opportunity to gain insight into working life under very different conditions, strengthening both respect and curiosity between Greenland and Denmark.”

A Greenlandic snowmobile mechanic apprentice demonstrated the realities of maintaining engines in Arctic conditions, where extreme cold can stop machinery entirely.

Culinary apprentices showcased traditional Greenlandic preparation techniques, including the use of the traditional ulo knife to skin seal, while offering visitors tastings of musk ox, seal, and reindeer dishes.

Visitors could additionally explore Greenlandic beadmaking traditions, meet painting apprentices, and learn about vocational pathways such as retail and trade education in Greenland.

“At a time when unity within the Kingdom of Denmark is in focus, the meeting between Danish and Greenlandic apprentices and trades provided an important platform for mutual understanding and inspiration. We were therefore extremely pleased that Greenland chose to participate with such strong commitment in Skills Denmark.”
